The curtain rises on a set at the corner of 69 rue des Archives, in the Marais district of Paris. A place that embodies a frontier, where the old world gives way to the new. In the distance, the pale moon sets gently over the towers of Notre-Dame. In a perfume shop, surrounded by glittering bottles, a man and a woman stand. The man, having succumbed to a fallen ruler, is condemned to an ultimate fate.

The woman, for her part, embodies a new soul, a new role. Desirable and conquering, she is a slightly condescending denunciation. The flutter of her eyelashes announces that her moment of glory has arrived, while she holds a scented blotter in her hand.
